Barclaycard is introducing major updates that will affect eCommerce payment gateways across the UK. If your online store uses Barclaycard for transactions, here’s what you need to know to stay compliant and maintain a smooth checkout experience.
1. ePDQ Gateway Phase-Out
Barclaycard will retire its ePDQ payment gateway by 31 March 2026. After this date, merchants cannot process online payments, refunds, or MOTO transactions through ePDQ.
2. Hosted Payment Solutions
Switching from ePDQ DirectLink to a Barclaycard hosted payment page or Smartpay Fuse reduces PCI DSS compliance risks and offers built-in fraud protection.
3. PSD2 & Strong Customer Authentication
Compliance with PSD2 regulations and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is mandatory. Barclaycard supports 3D Secure 2 (3DS2) and offers exemptions for recurring or low-risk transactions.
4. New API Features
Barclaycard’s Smartpay Fuse REST API enables:
- Subscription billing
- Tokenisation
- Multi-currency support
- Digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay
